Background of the study
Cultural perceptions of disability significantly affect how individuals with disabilities access healthcare services. In Isiala Ngwa North, deep-rooted cultural beliefs and traditional attitudes towards disability often result in stigmatization and discrimination, limiting access to essential healthcare (Nwosu, 2023). These perceptions influence not only community behavior but also the allocation of resources and the design of healthcare programs (Chidiebere, 2024). The study explores the intricate relationship between cultural beliefs, social stigma, and healthcare accessibility for persons with disabilities. By examining the historical and contemporary factors that shape these perceptions, the research aims to highlight the barriers faced by disabled individuals and propose interventions that promote inclusivity and equitable access to healthcare (Uche, 2025).

Statement of the problem
In Isiala Ngwa North, cultural perceptions and traditional biases regarding disability create significant barriers to healthcare access. Stigmatization and discrimination hinder the ability of persons with disabilities to obtain necessary medical care, leading to adverse health outcomes (Nwosu, 2023; Uche, 2025). The lack of culturally sensitive healthcare policies exacerbates these challenges, necessitating a comprehensive investigation into how traditional attitudes impact service delivery. This study aims to address these disparities and propose strategies to enhance healthcare inclusivity for disabled individuals.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess cultural perceptions of disability in Isiala Ngwa North.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these perceptions on healthcare access.
  3. To recommend culturally sensitive strategies to improve service delivery.

Research questions:

  1. What are the prevailing cultural perceptions of disability?
  2. How do these perceptions affect healthcare access for disabled individuals?
  3. What interventions can promote more inclusive healthcare practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Negative cultural perceptions significantly hinder healthcare access for persons with disabilities.
  2. Discriminatory attitudes correlate with reduced utilization of healthcare services.
  3. Culturally sensitive interventions can improve healthcare access.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into how cultural perceptions shape healthcare access for persons with disabilities. The findings will inform policymakers and healthcare providers, fostering the development of inclusive strategies that address cultural barriers and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations (Chidiebere, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing cultural perceptions of disability and their impact on healthcare access within Isiala Ngwa North Local Government, focusing exclusively on local cultural dynamics.

Definitions of terms:

  • Disability: A physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities.
  • Cultural Perceptions: Shared beliefs and attitudes within a community regarding specific issues.
  • Healthcare Access: The ability to obtain and utilize medical services.
