Background of the study
Cultural perceptions of disability significantly affect how individuals with disabilities access healthcare services. In Isiala Ngwa North, deep-rooted cultural beliefs and traditional attitudes towards disability often result in stigmatization and discrimination, limiting access to essential healthcare (Nwosu, 2023). These perceptions influence not only community behavior but also the allocation of resources and the design of healthcare programs (Chidiebere, 2024). The study explores the intricate relationship between cultural beliefs, social stigma, and healthcare accessibility for persons with disabilities. By examining the historical and contemporary factors that shape these perceptions, the research aims to highlight the barriers faced by disabled individuals and propose interventions that promote inclusivity and equitable access to healthcare (Uche, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Isiala Ngwa North, cultural perceptions and traditional biases regarding disability create significant barriers to healthcare access. Stigmatization and discrimination hinder the ability of persons with disabilities to obtain necessary medical care, leading to adverse health outcomes (Nwosu, 2023; Uche, 2025). The lack of culturally sensitive healthcare policies exacerbates these challenges, necessitating a comprehensive investigation into how traditional attitudes impact service delivery. This study aims to address these disparities and propose strategies to enhance healthcare inclusivity for disabled individuals.
